The Dive Staff here at Bimini Undersea is very excited to announce the addition of a new dive site to the Bimini Undersea dive schedule. Bull Run. Bull Run is a site that lies approximately 2 miles south of Victory Reef between South Cat Cay and Ocean Cay. It’s done as part of our extended day 2 tank dive trips to the Cat Cay area. The dive has a max depth of 60 ft. and features very high coral stands (15-17 ft high) amidst a white sandy bottom. The fish life is plentiful and the coral formations offer a number of great tunnels and swim-thrus to explore. And one more thing. Did we mention the SHARKS! When Diving Bull Run it is all but guaranteed that you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a number of the ocean’s top end predators. Usually Black Tip and Caribbean Reef Sharks. On our dives to date we usually see between 5 and 7 on each dive. We want to be clear that this is not a Shark Feeding dive. As we’ve stated in the past, Bimini Undersea does not do shark feeds. It’s always been our position that killing reef fish to feed to sharks to entertain people (divers) was never a good idea that supported the environment. The dive at Bull Run is however a by-product of that type of activity. A number of years ago, when shark feeding dives were all the rage, a number of live-aboard dive boats got together and decided to start feeding sharks at this location. We then began to learn something very interesting about sharks. They have a very loooooooong memory. Now, even though the number of regularly scheduled shark feeds have been greatly reduced (fewer live-aboard operators feeding the sharks less often), the sharks return to the site every time they hear a boat engine pulling up to the dive mooring. This phenomenon has been observed not only at Bull Run, but virtually every location throughout the Bahamas that has, or, still does conduct shark feeding dives.
Bull Run is not only about Sharks! Bull Run is teeming with a wide variety of marine life. And, a by-product of most shark feeding dives, some very large resident Groupers who also seem the have memories that rival an elephant. When sharks are fed, there’s usually quite a bit of fish debris floating around in the water. Just perfect for a hungry grouper. The fish learn very quickly that feeding time for the sharks mean they have a windfall meal coming also. In fact, it’s the groupers (not the sharks) that can become a bit grumpy and persistent when they realize that this group of divers is not here to bring dinner or a snack. Bull Run is a “thrill-a-minute” experience that has so far, blown the socks off of the Bimini Undersea divers we have taken there. And, as with all advanced level dives, there is a very precise dive plan and list of instructions that divers have to follow in order to have a safe and successful experience. Also, conditions must be just right for BU to schedule a dive trip to the remote site. Bull Run is our furthermost site and takes us 90 minutes to get there from our dock. It lies in a very exposed are so, like our Wild Dolphin Trips, we have to have favorable wind conditions to make it a pleasant trip for everyone. Bull Run is usually followed up with a dive on Victory Reef or Tuna Alley. And, having a dive computer greatly enhances your flexibility on that second dive. If you want to dive Bull Run, or any of the other outstanding dive sites offered by Bimini Undersea, give our reservation office a call and book your dive vacation now!
